Project Overview — Improving Safety, Capacity, and Code Compliance
Benson Electric upgraded a residential main electrical panel in El Cajon following an HOA-mandated safety review. The existing panel contained Stab-Lok and Pushmatic breakers—now recognized as major fire hazards. Our team replaced the panel with a solar-ready 200-amp system and brought the home into full NEC compliance.
What We Did
Old Panel Removed:
- Hazardous Stab-Lok/Pushmatic panel removed
New System Installed
- 200-amp main panel, solar-ready
- Two new ground rods added
- Cold water system bonded to electrical system
Key Discovery
- Home was missing proper bonding, a critical safety flaw
Why Bonding Matters
We ensured the home met NEC Article 250 standards. Proper bonding:
- Prevents electric shock from ungrounded metal systems
- Reduces fire risk from potential arcing
- Ensures system-wide electrical continuity and safety
- Is legally required for residential properties
One-Day Installation Timeline
We coordinated with SDG&E for a seamless, same-day upgrade:
- Morning: Power disconnected, old panel removed
- Afternoon: New panel installed, grounded, bonded, and inspected
- Evening: System approved and power restored
Why This Upgrade Matters
This upgrade offers the homeowner:
- Fire hazard elimination
- 200-amp capacity for modern energy use
- Future-ready system for solar and EV chargers
- Increased home safety and value
