Project Overview
Benson Electric completed fiber optic infrastructure upgrades for multiple facilities operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons across the United States. The project involved installing new single-mode fiber optic cabling to support communications infrastructure within secure correctional facilities.
Work included routing fiber optic cabling through underground conduit systems, pulling fiber through manholes and utility vaults, and installing fiber connections within facility buildings and telecommunications rooms.
Performing infrastructure installations within active correctional facilities requires strict adherence to security protocols and close coordination with facility personnel. Our team successfully completed fiber installations while maintaining operational security and following all required safety procedures.
Scope of Work
Benson Electric performed the installation, termination, and testing of fiber optic infrastructure across multiple federal facilities including:
- Pulling single-mode fiber optic cabling through underground conduit systems
- Routing fiber through manholes and underground utility infrastructure
- Installing fiber optic cabling into secure facility buildings
- Dressing fiber cables into server racks and telecommunications cabinets
- Performing fusion splicing of fiber optic strands
- Terminating fiber connections within communications equipment rooms
- Testing and certifying fiber connections to Federal Bureau of Prisons specifications

Confined Space & Secure Facility Work
A significant portion of the fiber installation required work within underground manholes and utility vaults, requiring confined space procedures and specialized installation practices.
All work was performed within active federal correctional facilities, requiring strict coordination with facility staff and adherence to security protocols to ensure safe operations within the prison environment.
Fiber Splicing & Testing
Once fiber optic infrastructure was installed, Benson Electric performed fusion splicing and termination of fiber strands to create permanent low-loss connections.
Each fiber connection was thoroughly tested using specialized fiber optic testing equipment to verify signal integrity and ensure the infrastructure met the performance requirements established by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Facilities Served
Fiber optic infrastructure upgrades were performed at multiple Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities including:
- FCI Schuylkill — Pennsylvania
- FCI Otisville — New York
- FCI Ray Brook — New York
- FCI Fort Dix — New Jersey
- FCI Englewood — Colorado
- FMC Devens — Massachusetts
Infrastructure Installed
- Single-mode fiber optic cabling
- Underground fiber routing through conduit and manhole systems
- Fiber optic rack termination and cable management
- Fusion spliced fiber connections
- Fiber optic testing and certification
Nationwide Infrastructure Capabilities
This project demonstrates Benson Electric's ability to mobilize crews and perform complex infrastructure installations nationwide. Our team routinely travels outside of San Diego to support specialized electrical and fiber optic installations requiring experienced technicians and strict adherence to safety and operational protocols.

Specialized Safety and Compliance
All work was completed within active correctional facilities under strict safety and federal security protocols, including:
- Conscious worker protocols near inmates
- Compliance with all FBOP operational rules
- Confined space entry with gas detection
- Emergency tripod rescue setups
Proven Federal Project Expertise
This multi-site contract demonstrates our ability to mobilize nationally, operate under strict security protocols, and execute technically complex electrical and communication upgrades for critical government infrastructure.
